Drug residues in water

Categories : Water quality

Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-cancer drugs, anti-depressive drugs, contraceptive pills are some of the drugs whose residues are now found in the natural environment. It is nearly 4000 listed drug molecules that are likely to be found in your glass of water...

Global drug consumption is rising sharply. But these drugs are not completely degraded by the body after their absorption. The residues that pass through the stools and urine end up in the wastewater that the treatment plants are not able to treat because they are not equipped for these molecules. In addition, there are thousands of tablets that some people throw down the sink or toilet.

Impacts on the natural environment and health

These residues accumulate in surface water as well as in groundwater. Besides the risk of involuntarily consuming these drugs and consequently absorbing unwanted active ingredients, even if they are in low doses, there is also the cocktail effect that we are unable to qualify.

In fact, there is the problem of antibiotic resistance in bacteria that are in prolonged contact with antibiotic residues. The medium-term consequences can be dramatic if certain strains of pathogenic bacteria become resistant to the antibiotics that are normally used to treat the pathologies that require them.

Too little research exists and it is very difficult to clarify the situation, as the work is so enormous if we take into account the interactions between the different molecules, the fauna, the flora... And even so, how to reproduce this reliably in the laboratory?

Today, there is no regulation imposing the verification of drug residues in drinking water. In other words, the subject is far from being settled!

While waiting for a real in-depth reflection, to convince the pharmaceutical industry to integrate the environmental consequences in the development of new drugs, to make sure that doctors only deliver the necessary quantity or dose and not whole boxes, part of which will not be used and thrown away, to communicate on the necessity to bring back the end of the boxes to the pharmacy so that they don't end up in the sinks or in the garbage, there is a solution: drink water purified by a Berkey® system!

Berkey® water filters with their Black Berkey® filters can filter out many pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors such as BPA, naproxin, octylphenol, progesterone, THMs and many others. Consult the analyses by following this link.
