Berkey Light® Purifier
The Berkey Light® water filter is a lightweight unit designed for use in outdoor activities such as camping, sports, travel and unexpected emergencies. It can also be used in a summer kitchen or pool house. Practical and fun, think of lighting the base with an LED, it will be the most beautiful effect at nightfall.
The Berkey Light® can also be a good choice for a home water purifier if you are looking for capacity. With a larger capacity than an equivalent stainless steel model such as the Big Berkey®, it is less expensive for those who want a more economical water filter for a larger capacity.
Simply pour water into the upper chamber of the system and easily dispense pure water through the tap in the lower chamber.
The 2 Black Berkey® filters that come standard with your system purify 22700 liters of water. For detailed calculations of the life of Black Berkey® filters, see our FAQ.
By equipping your Big Berkey® with 2 additional Black Berkey® filters, you ensure a filtered water production of approximately 26.5 liters per hour.
The Berkey Light® system includes :
*The flow rate is calculated with the upper chamber full. The flow rate decreases as the water level decreases.
Data sheet
No, there are no phthalates in the chambers of the Berkey Light®. Berkey® plastics are copolyester and guaranteed BPA-free.
In addition, the Black Berkey® purification element reduces certain phthalates, including butylbenzylphthalate and diethylphthalate.

Since 2008, the Berkey Light® is no longer made of polycarbonate as it was before, but on the basis of a copolyester (elastomers based on thermoplastic polyester) which does not contain Bisphenol A, and which is also very solid, resistant to scratches, stains, shocks and odors.
The Berkey Light®, like all other Berkey® water purification systems, requires little maintenance.
It is essentially a matter of cleaning from time to time: we suggest washing the lower chamber once a month with soapy water (washing-up liquid). In areas with hard water, lime deposits can build up on various parts of the system after prolonged use. To remove it, soak the affected part(s) in vinegar or a 50-50% vinegar/water mixture for about 15 minutes. Finish by cleaning with soapy dishwater, then rinse.
After prolonged use, it is possible that the flow rate of your system may decrease. To correct this, simply scrub the outside of each Black Berkey® purification element with a stiff brush or ScotchBrite® pad and reboot the elements.
We also recommend keeping the Berkey Light® out of direct sunlight.
The Berkey Light® water filter is very popular as it is portable, lightweight and transparent. The Berkey Light® also has the advantage of having a large storage capacity of over 10 liters of filtered water. Its base, which raises the system, allows the tap to be naturally higher than on other systems, making it easy to position a glass.
Most people use a carafe or pitcher to pour water into the upper chamber. If you have a faucet with a hose on your sink, this can also be a good solution.
The upper chamber, which contains water only momentarily, will need to be cleaned less frequently than the inner chamber, in which water remains for a longer period of time. We recommend cleaning the lower chamber once a month.
Stainless steel chambers can be cleaned with soapy water (dishwashing liquid).
In areas with hard water, lime deposits can build up on the lugs and chambers after prolonged use. To remove it, you can use vinegar pure or in a 50-50% mixture of vinegar and water that you spray on and leave for about 15 minutes. Then wipe with a sponge, then wash with soapy water and rinse.
Yes, it is quite normal to have 1 to 2.5 cm of water remaining in the upper chamber. To be filtered, the water must pass through very fine micropores in the filters. The lower the water level in the upper chamber, the lower the pressure available to force the water through the micropores. You may have noticed that the filtration rate is much faster when the upper chamber is full than when it is half empty. This is because there is more pressure. The only way to remedy this problem would be to enlarge the pores of the filter elements, which would reduce the efficiency of the Berkey purification system. During each cycle, the residual water from the previous cycle mixes with the water from the current cycle and is then purified. There is no need to worry about excess water during normal use. If, however, you stop using your filter for a long time, for example during a vacation, it is best to empty both chambers and let them dry completely.
Concerning the lower chamber, the tap cannot technically be positioned on the bottom of the tank for reasons of watertightness. Don't worry, this is not stagnant water as it will mix again and again during the successive filtrations.
We recommend replacing your filtered water with your Berkey® system after three days if it has not been used. If the water is in a cold environment, the time can be extended to one week. This is a precautionary principle. The reason is that when you filter your water, the chemicals that inhibit the growth of bacteria are removed. In very humid environments, bacterial growth can occur more quickly.
If you need to transport your Berkey® filtration and purification system, you must first remove the Black Berkey® purification elements. If you do not remove them from the system, you may break the rods. Place your water filters in a safe, leak-proof package. The stainless steel top and bottom parts fit together for easy transport and space savings. If your system has a level valve, be careful to remove or secure it so it doesn't break.
Important : Failure to remove the filter elements from the system may result in rod failure and will void the manufacturer's warranty.
It all depends on the technique used. CO2 or magnetic softeners, for example, produce water that is normally drinkable (to be confirmed by the manufacturer) and is not a problem with Berkey® systems.
But the most commonly used softeners work with ion exchangers that convert calcium and magnesium, which are responsible for the accumulation of limescale, into sodium. Using these softeners produces soft but salty water...
Black Berkey® water filters are designed to remove a very large number of pollutants as specified in test results from an independent laboratory. However, they do not remove the mineral salts initially present in the water and preserve them for the benefit of our body. The salts used to soften the water in your softener, and present in large quantities, will not be filtered by the Black Berkey® filtration element and will end up in your drinking water. Unlike natural mineral salts, they are highly concentrated and should not be consumed.
Therefore, we do not recommend that you use water softened by a water softener to supply your Berkey® purifier.
Note: Some systems are equipped with a bypass to remove water from the system before it goes through the softener. In this case, this water can be used without any problem with the Berkey® water purification systems.

Product is not worth the cost. Horrible rubber tasteing water that I have to run thru a distiller and another carbon filter to get rid of the rubber taste. Ive washed all products with dr bonners soap at least 10 times tried soaking all in baking soda water(not filters) for over 72 hours no change of flavor, also soaked in apple cider vineger water no change in flavor, boiled plugs and plastic faucet in water for 20 minutes. Also filtered tap water numerous times with no change of flavor. Determined its the rubber plugs provided that causes horrible car tire flavor. For the high price we pay Why cant Berkey provide high quality parts with their products ??

Why didn't you contact our customer service to find a solution together? This would have saved you a lot of cleaning and boiling the different parts separately. If you have read the many reviews of the Berkey Light model, you would have noticed that this is not a general problem. Remember that our customer service is always available for you, and that leaving a negative review without even contacting us first is not necessarily very logical. We would have been able to help you to remedy this permanently. If you prefer to go it alone, that's your choice and that's a shame.
Sincerely, the Berkey Store team

Well, it is good quality, but I wonder if it is 10,4 L - I didn't check it, but 2 x 5 L canister do not fit in. It took some time / runs (after the primer process !) to have a better water throughput, but now using it on a regular basis - good performance.
