A study was conducted on 258 rivers in 106 different countries. What do they have in common? They are all polluted with residues from the pharmaceutical industry at levels that are dangerous for humans.
This comprehensive and factual international study shows that this pollution affects more than a quarter of the world's rivers. And that this pollution is present even in remote places such as Antarctica or the Amazon.
The drug residues found, such as antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory drugs and others, come both from the care of people living longer and longer and from agriculture, which uses certain substances to treat farm animals.
Ecosystems are affected, with more or less deleterious effects, but also human consumption. In fact, since wastewater treatment plants cannot filter these substances because they are not designed to eliminate them, they are allowed to pass through and some of these molecules are undoubtedly found in our tap water.
