What's wrong with bottled water?
Firstly, its composition. Most of the time, they are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a chemical compound that is harmful to human health and has been accused by several recent European studies of containing endocrine disruptors.
While the risk remains low when used once and at room temperature, it's a completely different matter when these same bottles are subjected to high temperatures. If it's not you who leaves your bottle in the sun, you should know that most of the time, when it's being stored or transported, entire pallets of water packs are left in the sun for days on end... And when this happens, a phenomenon called leaching occurs (dissolution of the chemical components in the water) with the appearance in the water of a chemical substance called antimony trioxide, which is known to be an endocrine disruptor.
Secondly, there is a real risk of bacterial proliferation.
The simple fact of touching your bottle with your mouth deposits a large number of bacteria that can develop at lightning speed and contaminate your bottle. Some of these bacteria can be pathogenic and carry diseases. For this simple reason, we recommend that you never re-use a plastic bottle.
Bottled water contributes to environmental pollution.
The billions of bottles used around the world have a real impact on the environment. Some are recycled, but many end up in nature, in the oceans, and gradually degrade, releasing microplastics, the dangers of which we now know. A previous article in our blog warned of this pollution, which is now on an unprecedented scale: https://berkey-store.com/en/blogberkeystore/microplastics-in-tap-water-n7
Finally, one of the criticisms levelled at bottled water is its cost.
On average, bottled water costs 60 times more than tap water, and is often of poorer quality.
At Berkey®, a litre of water costs less than a cent a litre, and is free from most of the pollutants that are harmful to health (https://berkey-store.com/en/content/16-tests-results-berkey-filtrers), which are unfortunately increasingly found in tap water.
What if the ultimate solution was to filter your tap water with a Berkey® water purifier?
